Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)  The UK has had a long-standing issue with lower numbers of women in technical education and careers - but the tide is turning: .  An EngineeringUK study (published May 2024) said women represented 15.7% of the UK’s engineering workforce and, despite older women leaving the sector, that the previous year had seen the highest ever influx into the sector of female engineers aged 15 to 34. A February 2025 article, quoting Women in Construction Week data, stated there'd been year-on-year growth over the last decade in the number of women entering the construction industry; with women now accounting for 1.3million, or 11.2%, of the total workforce.   With companies like Siemens pledging to see at least 30% of women in top management positions by the end of 2030, this is just one example of the opportunities for women in tech.  Modern STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers offer great opportunities for earning potential, progression and making a positive impact on the world. The East Midlands IoT is committed to improving those figures further and supporting women into lifelong tech careers. Our teaching and facilities provide the perfect mix of support, challenge and high-quality learning experience to kick start your future in STEM.  In 2025/26 we've been promoting our 'Women in STEM' campaign; working with UK training charity TechSheCan  Our volunteers go into schools to talk to young people, especially girls, about pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) courses and careers. In October 2025, as part of our 'IoT Inspire' series of online talks featuring different experts, we looked at 'How to encourage more girls and women into STEM careers'; with speakers Donna Otchere, Loughborough University Phd researcher and co-founder of SiSTEM UK, and Dr Ghazal Vahidi, Senior Lecturer in Careers and Employability at the University of Derby.  We are undertaking research; talking to girls and women, to really understand their ambitions and life goals, and demonstrate how these can be achieved through STEM educational and career pathways.   In the meantime, let’s hear from those already on their journey or actively working with our industrial partners (see below):   Digital
