A national colleges’ campaign has featured the East Midlands Institute of Technology’s work as supporting UK Government ‘clean energy’ ambitions.
The Association of Colleges’ (AOC) campaign launched today (December 9) highlights its view that more investment is needed in UK further education colleges; if the Government is to meet the five ‘missions’ set out by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in his major speech last Thursday (December 5).
The five missions include Mission 2: ‘Make Britain a clean energy superpower’.
The AOC campaign launched today details how different FE college providers are contributing to reach of the five missions, including the East Midlands IoT’s work around developing skills for a clean energy future.
A case study on the East Midlands IoT’s work can be found on the AOC’s website at link - www.aoc.co.uk/news-campaigns-parliament/mission-accepted/mission-two-make-britian-a-clean-energy-superpower
This talks about the IoT’s work with partners – Loughborough College, University of Derby, Loughborough University, and Derby College Group (DCG) – to “develop the advanced skills required to address the grand engineering challenges associated with clean growth”
“By focusing on engineering, manufacturing, digital technologies, and sustainable construction, the EMIoT is equipping students with the expertise needed to excel in a rapidly evolving, data-driven economy,” adds the case study.
Strong collaboration with the East Midlands IoT’s business partners – Rolls-Royce, Toyota, National Grid ESO, Alstom, Fujitsu, Uniper, and Bloc Digital – is also highlighted.
East Midlands IoT is also mentioned in an accompanying report to the AOC campaign: Mission accepted: the role of colleges across the government’s five missions
David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “Successful delivery of the missions will rely heavily on colleges as anchor institutions working closely with others locally, but government needs to create the environment in which that collaboration is incentivised and funded.”
In September the East Midlands IoT and the East Midlands Freeport jointly announced the launch of the ‘Future Energy Skills Hub’(or FESH).
A £2m investment by the Freeport, in new advanced manufacturing and clean energy skills training, will be delivered by East Midlands IoT, via its partners, beginning in September 2025.
Current clean energy courses run via the East Midlands IoT include its BSc and BEng Hons in Sustainable Engineering, and MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology
